July 31 - August 16, 2009
The Claus M. Halle Institute for Global Learning and Emory’s Race and Difference Inititative sponsored a novel faculty study trip that included a series of expert meetings in India from August 1-16, 2009. The trip was titled “Subalternity and Difference” and explored the question of the subaltern citizen in American, Indian, and other contexts. The group visited the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai, the English and Foreign Languages University in Hyderabad, the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, and Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi, and participated in sessions during which they presented papers and exchanged ideas with their Indian colleagues. The group also had a special meeting with the editorial board of the Economic and Political Weekly which is a well renowned academic journal in India. The dedication and hard work of the trip leaders ensured an excellent trip for the group. The group plans to produce a volume based on papers presented throughout the trip and many of the members of the group have contributed to Professor Gyanendra Pandey’s recently published edited volume Subaltern Citizens and their Histories Investigations from India and the USA (Routledge 2009). This trip will serve as a model for future Halle Institute faculty study trips to India or China that promote faculty distinction and bring international recognition to Emory.
