Public health expert K. Srinath Reddy, president of the Public Health Foundation of India, delivered the 2012 Sheth Lecture in Indian Studies at Emory University School of Law on Sunday, Feb. 12. As a Halle Distinguished Fellow and a Global Health Institute Visiting Scholar, Reddy discussed India's move toward universal health coverage.
Prior to his tenure at PHFI, Reddy headed the Department of Cardiology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He is Bernard Lown Visiting Professor of Cardiovascular Health at the Harvard School of Public Health and also teaches at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health.
Reddy has served on many World Health Organization expert panels and chairs the Foundations Advisory Board of the World Heart Federation. He also chairs the Core Advisory Group on Health and Human Rights for the National Human Rights Commission of India and the High Level Expert Group on Universal Health Coverage set up by the Planning Commission of India. He is a member of World Economic Forum’s Global Health Board.
His contributions to public health have been recognized through many awards and honors, including the WHO Director General’s Award for Outstanding Global Leadership in Tobacco Control (World Health Assembly, 2003), Padma Bhushan (Presidential Honour, India, 2005), Queen Elizabeth Medal (Royal Society for Health Promotion, UK, 2005), Luther Terry Medal for Leadership in Tobacco Control (American Cancer Society, 2009), and Membership of the U.S. National Academies (Institute of Medicine, 2005).
