As part of the Halle Speaker Series, Tonio Andrade, Mary Brown Bullock, and Baogang Guo—prominent scholars of China, all with recently published books on different aspects of Chinese political and cultural development—participated in a panel discussion on Nov. 29, 2011. A reception and book signing with the authors followed.
Tonio Andrade is associate professor of history at Emory University. His new book, “Lost Colony: The Untold Story of China’s First Great Victory over the West” was published this month by Princeton University Press. Examining the strengths and weaknesses of European and Chinese military techniques during the Sino-Dutch War, “Lost Colony” provides a new perspective on long-held assumptions about Western power, Chinese might, and the nature of war.
Mary Brown Bullock is distinguished visiting professor of China Studies at Emory University, senior scholar and former director of the Asia Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center, and president emerita of Agnes Scott College. Her book “The Oil Prince’s Legacy: Rockefeller Philanthropy in China,” published this year by Stanford University Press, traces Rockefeller philanthropic involvement in China from the 19th century to today as a window on U.S.-China cultural relations.
Baogang Guo is professor of political science and director of the Center for International Education at Dalton State University, and a research associate with the China Research Center. His 2010 book, “China’s Quest for Political Legitimacy: The New Equity-Enhancing Politics,” examines the challenges facing Chinese political development in the near future. Guo's forthcoming book, "The Chinese Labyrinth," is co-authored with He Li and will be available in December 2011.
This event was co-sponsored by the China Research Center.
